Sherri gives career tips to Cox Media viewers in Phoenix! Hello! I was in San Francisco last week for a coaching conference and had a chance encounter with a taxi cab driver – “Bob” from Burma. When he was 16 years old, he came here with his parents who had won the “Visa Lottery.”  Every year, millions of people living in Burma submit requests for the opportunity to live in the US. Out of millions, only 250 get accepted.  That chance encounter with Bob from Burma was a powerful moment for me. I keep thinking about how much I admire his parents.  Yes, they were probably living in miserable circumstances, but it took such courage to seize the opportunity and leave their home and extended family forever. How did they make such a big change?  What resources, if any, were available to them? Not a member?  Join now to access this call with Sherri's special ONE MONTH FR*EE membership trial.   5 Resources to Drive Your Career Forward by Sherri Thomas Change is scary.  Change can be intimidating.  The fear of change, fear of failure, even the fear of the unknown.  EVERYONE has trepidation about change.  EVERYONE.  But when the time comes that you cannot stay in the same situation any longer -  it’s time to make your move. If you’re ready to take action and make a career change, then arm yourself with these five (5) resources to help make your career change easier. Your network – Talk to people who've made a successful career change and learn their personal story of challenges, lessons learned, and the result of their efforts.  These success stories can inspire you and pave the way to help you make your own successful career change. The key is to surround yourself with these professionals. You'll hear new ideas and fresh perspectives.  Plus, their passion can be the best motivator!    Professional Organizations – Google “professional organizations” and the name of your city for a list of industry associations and business organizations that can teach you about industries and job roles within those industries. Also, most offer volunteer opportunities to help you gain experience, deepen your knowledge, and introduce you to others who may hire you or introduce you to others who could potentially hire you.   Company Websites – If you have a list of companies where you’d like to work, then spend time perusing their websites. Read their blogs, press releases and investor relations section to learn about their company culture, and how their business is doing. Is it growing?  Are they opening new lines of service or launching new products?  Do you feel inspired to work there? Also, read and bookmark their “jobs” web page.  Not all companies will promote their job opportunities on external job boards, but all companies will promote them on their own company website!   Professional Networking Sites – Add your professional profile to LinkedIn.com (you can look for me and join my network!)  I’m not a big fan of MySpace.com or Facebook.com for professional networking. Those sites were created for social networking. Start sending updates to your contacts saying that you’re looking for your next opportunity and ask them for leads.  Also ask them for a virtual introduction to others they may know who work in a company or industry where you want to work.     A Personal Coach – Ask your network for recommendations or Google “personal career coach” to find someone who can give you the roadmap to your new career.  Look for a coach who offers experience, confidence, and results. This is someone who can give you career strategies, motivation, and partner with you during your career change.   Your Assignment:  If You're Ready for Change - then Take Action! Start mapping out your career change.  Take out a pen and piece of paper and write down in big letters, two of the five key strategies mentioned above that you’re going to do! Next, pull out your calendar and schedule them in.  The question for most of us isn’t, “When are we going to do them.” Instead, the real question is, “What are we going to GIVE UP in your schedule to MAKE THIS HAPPEN? Change takes commitment and action.  When you’re ready to take action and start stepping into your dream career, remember that you don’t have to do it all by yourself.  There are an abundance of resources and support available to help – you just have to make a commitment to start using them!
