SECURING
YOUR JOB IN AN UNSTABLE ECONOMY
by:
Sherri Thomas
During your career there are times you can take
risks and times when it’s wise to take caution.
Right now, it’s best to take caution. In the scary
high seas of today’s job market, if you’re currently
employed now is not the time to rock the
boat.
Even if you get an offer for your “perfect” dream
job – be cautious. What if you leave your stable
(okay, so maybe it’s not so gratifying) position to
go to another company, only to find the guy who
hired you is now losing his job, or worse the
company is on its way to going out of business.
So instead of looking for ways to leave
your current company, you may want to look for ways
to stay. Focus on improving your performance so
that if hard times hit – you’ll be better positioned
within the company to keep your job.
Here are six (6) tips to help secure your position
in an unstable economy -
Exceed expectations.
Now is the time to be viewed as a key contributor.
Make sure you’re focusing on delivering high quality
and results. Now, more than ever, look for ways to
exceed expectations. Strive to consistently meet or
beat goals. Also, it’s not necessarily the effort
you put in (coming in early, staying late) – it’s
results that count!
Be visible. Keep your manager, as well as
other senior leaders updated on your progress
through all of your status reports, project updates
and presentations. If your manager is the only who
knows about your successes and then leaves the
company, you’ll need a strong network of influencers
who can endorse and champion you.
Grow the money.
With outrageous fuel prices and finicky customers,
all companies are scrutinizing over one thing: how
to stay in business. So if you can contribute
towards saving your company costs and growing the
bottom line, you’ll be more likely to secure your
own job if downsizing occurs.
Identify ways your department could save money. How
about ways to grow your current customer base, reach
a new target audience or retain more customers?
Focus your attention on helping your company grow
market share, save costs, or generate more money.
Be flexible.
It’s easy to think that your job is about you, but
it’s not. Your job is all about helping the company
be successful. Everything you’re working on is for
the greater good of the company and keeping it
afloat.
Expand your vision to do what’s right for the
company. Pitch in and help out other team members
or projects. Volunteer to take on a much needed
assignment even if it’s out of your job role.
Negotiate your time and projects with your manager
so that you’re focusing on the “right” priorities to
help the company succeed.
No battles. There’s
a time and place to pick your battles, and right now
is not the time, nor the place. In a time of
turbulence, attitude is critical. Be a pillar of
strength. Role model grace under pressure. Don’t
complain. Never bully. Get along well with
everyone. And if you absolutely must raise your
voice, do so in your pillow at home.
Be grateful for your job. According
to the World Bank study published in April 2008, if
you make $36,000 or higher annually you are
considered “high income” compared to the rest of the
world. If you make at least $40,000 annually you’re
in the top 2% of the world’s income.
See study.
Be proud of your job. Be proud of your paycheck.
And be grateful for the opportunity to be employed.
